Microplastics in Coffee: What You Need to Know

Heat + plastic = microplastics in your coffee. These common brewing items may be contributing more than flavor.

For many of us, coffee is a daily ritual. But recent research suggests that microplastics may be making their way into that morning cup—especially when coffee is brewed using plastic components or single-use pods.

Several recent articles have highlighted this concern. Peak State Coffee explains how hot water interacting with plastic lids, filters, and pods can cause tiny plastic particles to shed directly into brewed coffee. Million Marker also points out that single-serve plastic pods may release microplastics and chemical additives when exposed to heat and pressure during brewing. Other studies have shown that hot beverages are especially effective at drawing microplastics out of plastic-lined containers.

While research on long-term health impacts is still evolving, scientists are increasingly concerned about chronic microplastic exposure. These particles have been found throughout the human body and are being studied for potential links to inflammation, hormone disruption, and other health effects.

Reducing exposure doesn’t require giving up coffee—it starts with smarter choices:

  • Limit contact between hot liquids and plastic
  • Choose brewing methods that rely on glass, ceramic, or metal
  • Avoid disposable cups and plastic-lined filters
  • Reduce reliance on single-use plastic pods
