Fall means cooler temperatures and changing leaves—but it can also mean sneezing, congestion and itchy eyes. Ragweed pollen is a major fall allergy trigger, and outdoor mold spores from damp leaves and vegetation can also contribute.
Unfortunately, those allergens don’t always stay outside. Pollen and other particles enter our homes through open windows and doors and hitch a ride on our clothing, shoes, hair and pets.
One simple way to help reduce airborne allergens inside your home is a portable air purifier with a HEPA filter.
More Than Just Allergy Relief
A HEPA air purifier can help capture airborne particles including:
- Pollen
- Dust
- Pet dander
- Mold spores
- Smoke particles
- Fine particulate matter (PM2.5)
True HEPA filters are designed to capture at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, the particle size used for the HEPA efficiency standard.

That means the purifier you purchase for fall allergies can continue helping reduce airborne particulate pollution throughout the year.
What About VOCs and Odors?
Here’s an important distinction: HEPA filters capture particles, but they don’t effectively remove gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
If VOCs, certain gases or odors are also a concern, consider a purifier that combines HEPA filtration with activated carbon or another sorbent material.
An easy way to remember it:
HEPA = particles
Activated carbon = certain gases and odors
Choosing an Air Purifier

Don’t choose a purifier based on advertising claims alone. Look for:
- HEPA filtration: For allergens and fine particles.
- Appropriate CADR: Clean Air Delivery Rate indicates how much filtered air the purifier can deliver. Choose one appropriately sized for your room.
- Activated carbon: Consider this if gases, VOCs or odors are a concern.
- Reasonable noise levels: Especially important in bedrooms.
- Affordable replacement filters: Check replacement costs before buying.
And most importantly—run it! A purifier only cleans the air that passes through it. Longer operating times and higher fan speeds generally filter more air.
Air Purifiers Are Only Part of the Solution
Air filtration works best when combined with source control. During fall allergy season, keep windows closed when pollen is high, leave shoes at the door, vacuum regularly, control indoor moisture and change your HVAC filters as recommended.
And remember: an air purifier cannot solve an active mold problem. You need to identify and correct the source of moisture.
A Simple Step Toward Cleaner Indoor Air

Sustainable living doesn’t always require expensive or dramatic changes. A properly sized portable air purifier can be a relatively simple way to reduce airborne allergens and other particulate pollutants in the rooms where you spend the most time.
You may buy it because of your fall allergies—but cleaner indoor air is a benefit you can appreciate all year long.
That’s what Sustainable Sherri is about: simple, practical and cost-effective choices that can help create healthier homes and a healthier environment.
